Black Guitar - the guitar techniques

The main accompaniment is played by using the open tuning DGCGCD.

Martin Carthy fans will recognise this as the tuning that he uses for his famous creation 'Famous Flower of Serving Men'.

However on this song Martin chooses to use the guitar rather like Joni Mitchell uses a dulcimer.  He moves up and down the fretboard a shape that in standard tuning would be two finger A7.  Its a great effect.

I have used the very simplest three chord trick, plus the very easy open scales that appear naturally below ones fingers in this tuning.

The accompanying slide guitar is the same Faith Jupiter Eclipse.  This time the tuning is DGDGBD and it is capo-ed at the fifth fret.

Although this tuning sometimes called Spanish or Open Cross G tuning was beloved of the great Robert Johnson (another candidate for the black guitar award) - I use it for several pieces you can see three of them Aunty Nelly,; Raglan Road and Arthur McBride on my Youtube page here:-

The slide I used here is a brass John Dunlop.

The song was recorded on Zoom Multi track machine.
